The best private messaging apps that don't need a phone number
The best private messaging apps without a phone number in 2026 are Session (decentralized, open source), SimpleX Chat (no user IDs at all), Threema (paid, Swiss, anonymous IDs), Signal (usernames, with numberless sign-up in beta) and Talklio (no install or account, for temporary chats with up to five people). The right one depends on whether you want a permanent messenger or a short-lived private space.
Your phone number is one of the most revealing things you can hand over. It's tied to your SIM, your bank, your accounts and often your real name. The good news is that you no longer have to give it up to message privately.
We make Talklio, so we've tried hard to be fair. Talklio isn't the best choice for everyone, and we say so below. Our editorial policy explains how we keep comparisons fair. Every claim about other apps links to their own documentation or a reputable source, current as of October 2026.

Talklio
Best for: short, private conversations with a few people, without anybody installing anything.
Talklio (that's us) is the only app here that runs entirely in the browser with no account at all. One person makes a space, adds up to five people with their own passwords, and shares one link. Each person gets a private, end-to-end encrypted chat with the owner, with photos, voice notes and voice or video calls. Every message deletes itself after 24 hours, and the whole space closes after 30 days.

- Strengths: nothing to install, nothing to sign up for, everything deleted on a schedule, works on any phone or computer.
- Weaknesses: no group chats, no history beyond 24 hours, and it's a web app rather than an app-store app. Not meant to be your everyday messenger.
How it works in detail: How Talklio works and Security.
Session
Best for: a permanent messenger with strong anonymity.
Session gives you a random Account ID instead of a phone number or email, and a recovery password (a list of words) to restore it on a new device. Messages travel through an onion-routing network of community-run servers, so no single server knows both who sent a message and who received it. Groups hold up to 100 people. Session is open source and stewarded by the Session Technology Foundation in Switzerland.
- Strengths: no phone number, decentralized, hides your IP address from contacts and servers, open source.
- Weaknesses: lose your recovery password and your account is gone. Onion routing can make delivery slower than mainstream apps.
SimpleX Chat
Best for: people who want as little metadata as possible.
SimpleX Chat goes a step further than most: it gives users no identifiers at all, not even random ones. You connect by sharing a one-time invitation link or scanning a QR code. Profiles and contacts stay on your device, and servers only hold messages until they're delivered. It's open source and was audited by Trail of Bits in 2022.
- Strengths: no user IDs, no phone number, you can run your own servers.
- Weaknesses: connecting takes an extra step, and fewer people you know will already use it.
Threema
Best for: a polished, paid privacy app from a long-established company.
Threema assigns you a random Threema ID, and adding a phone number or email is optional. It's developed in Switzerland with servers there, supports voice, video and group calls, and has a desktop app. It costs a one-off fee (about $6.99 on the US App Store, with prices varying by country), which pays for the service instead of ads or data.
- Strengths: mature and polished, no phone number required, no ads or tracking.
- Weaknesses: it's paid, so friends need to buy it too.
Signal
Best for: everyday secure messaging with people you already know.
Signal is the best-known secure messenger, and its encryption protocol is the industry standard. Since 2024 you can set a username and hide your phone number from the people you talk to. In September 2026, Signal began testing sign-up without a phone number in its Android beta, with a one-off $2.99 fee to deter spam.
- Strengths: excellent encryption, huge user base, run by a nonprofit.
- Weaknesses: most people still need a phone number to register (for now).
What about WhatsApp and Telegram?
Both still need a phone number to sign up. WhatsApp's 2026 usernames let you message people without showing them your number, and Telegram lets you hide your number behind a username. But your account is still tied to a number behind the scenes. See Talklio vs WhatsApp and Talklio vs Telegram.
How to choose
- You want one app for life, anonymously: Session or SimpleX.
- You want something polished and don't mind paying: Threema.
- Your friends are already on it and you just want your number hidden: Signal.
- You want a private space with a few people that ends by itself, with nothing to install: Talklio.
How we compared
We looked at five things: whether a phone number is needed to sign up, how you're identified to others, whether the app must be installed, whether chats are end-to-end encrypted, and what it costs. We used each app's own documentation or app store listing, plus independent sources, and checked everything in October 2026. Apps change quickly, so check the current version before deciding. If something here is out of date, email hello@talklio.app and we'll fix it.
