# How to deactivate Instagram temporarily in 2026

> To deactivate Instagram temporarily, open your profile, tap the menu, go to Accounts Center, choose your Instagram profile under account management, tap Deactivation or deletion, pick Deactivate account and confirm with your password. Your profile is hidden until you log back in, and you can only deactivate once a week.

Deactivating Instagram is the middle ground between deleting the app and deleting your account. Your profile disappears from view, nothing is lost, and you can come back whenever you like just by logging in. Meta has moved the option a few times, and it now lives in **Accounts Center**. Here's exactly where to find it.

## Before you start

- **You can only deactivate once a week.** Instagram shows this on the deactivate screen itself, so don't do it on a whim and then change your mind the next day.
- **Threads goes quiet too.** Deactivating Instagram also deactivates the Threads profile linked to it ([Technobezz, 2026](https://www.technobezz.com/how-to-deactivate-instagram)).
- **You'll need your password.** If you sign in with Facebook or have forgotten it, reset it first.
- **Tell your close people where to find you.** Once you're gone, your DMs go quiet. See [how to tell friends you're going offline](/guides/how-to-tell-friends-youre-going-offline).

## Deactivate Instagram on iPhone or Android

1. Open Instagram and go to your **profile**.
2. Tap the **menu** (three lines) at the top right.
3. Tap **Accounts Center** (some versions say **Meta Account**).
4. Tap **Manage accounts**, then **Manage** next to your Instagram profile. (Some versions show **Personal details**, then **Account ownership and control** here instead.)
5. Tap **Deactivation or deletion**.
6. Select **Deactivate account**, then tap **Continue**.
7. Enter your **password**, pick a reason and tap **Deactivate account** to confirm.

Meta tweaks these menu labels every few months, so if a step doesn't match exactly, look for "Accounts Center" and "Deactivation or deletion". Those two have stayed consistent. Meta's own instructions are on the [Instagram Help Center](https://help.instagram.com/728869160569983/).

## Deactivate Instagram on a computer

1. Go to [instagram.com](https://www.instagram.com) and log in.
2. Click **More** (bottom left), then **Settings**.
3. Click **Accounts Center**.
4. Click **Manage accounts** and **Manage** next to your Instagram profile (or **Personal details**, then **Account ownership and control**).
5. Click **Deactivation or deletion** and select **Deactivate account**.
6. Re-enter your password and confirm.

## What happens while you're deactivated

| | While deactivated |
| --- | --- |
| Your profile | Hidden. People who search for you won't find it |
| Your posts, comments and likes | Hidden, not deleted |
| Your Threads profile | Also deactivated |
| Your data | Kept, so you can pick up where you left off |
| Coming back | Log in again and everything returns |

## How to reactivate Instagram

Just log back in with your username and password, in the app or at instagram.com. If you see an option to reactivate automatically on a set date, choose it only if you want to be pulled back in on a schedule. Plenty of people prefer to decide on the day.

## Deactivate vs delete vs just removing the app

| Option | What it does | Easy to undo? |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Delete the app | Removes it from your phone. Your account stays live and people can still message you | Yes, reinstall |
| Deactivate | Hides your account until you log in again | Yes, log in |
| Delete the account | Schedules permanent deletion of your profile and content | Only during Meta's grace period, then no |

For a break, deactivation is usually the sweet spot. Deleting only the app leaves your DMs open, so people may think you're ignoring them. Deleting the account is permanent.

## Keeping in touch while you're off Instagram

The thing most people miss after deactivating isn't the feed. It's the handful of friends they mostly talked to in DMs. Before you deactivate, give those few people another way to reach you that has no feed attached.

That's the gap [Talklio](/how-it-works) was built for. You make one private space, add up to five people with their own passwords, and send them a link. Every chat is end-to-end encrypted, messages disappear after 24 hours, and the space closes after 30 days, so it ends with your break instead of becoming another app to check. Our full guide to [taking a break from social media](/guides/how-to-take-a-break-from-social-media) covers the rest.

## Frequently asked questions

### How long can you deactivate Instagram for?

Meta doesn't publish a maximum. Your account stays deactivated until you log back in, unless you chose an automatic reactivation date.

### Can people still message me on Instagram when I'm deactivated?

Your profile is hidden while you're deactivated, so people can't find you or view your account. If you need to stay reachable, share another way to contact you before you go.

### How often can I deactivate Instagram?

Once a week. Instagram shows this limit on the deactivation screen.

### Does deactivating Instagram deactivate Threads?

Yes. Deactivating your Instagram account also deactivates the Threads profile connected to it.

### Will my followers know I deactivated?

Instagram doesn't send a notification, but people may notice your profile is missing if they search for it or try to open it.
