# Talklio vs WhatsApp

> WhatsApp is the better everyday messenger for staying in touch with lots of people. Talklio is better when you want a temporary private chat without sharing your phone number: no account, end-to-end encryption, messages that always delete after 24 hours, and a link that closes after 30 days.

WhatsApp is one of the most used apps on the planet, and for good reason. It's free, it's everywhere, and it encrypts your chats end to end by default. So why would anyone use Talklio instead? Because they're built for different jobs. WhatsApp is your permanent address book. Talklio is a temporary room you can lock and walk away from.

## Sign-up and your phone number

This is the biggest difference. To use WhatsApp you register with a phone number, and historically that number is what other people see. WhatsApp has been rolling out [usernames in 2026](https://about.fb.com/news/2026/06/its-time-to-reserve-your-whatsapp-username/) so you can talk to new people without revealing your number, which is a welcome change. But your account is still tied to a number behind the scenes.

Talklio has no accounts at all. The person who makes a space chooses a display name and a password for each person. Nobody types in a number, an email or a real name. When the space closes, there's nothing left that points back to anyone.

## Encryption

Both apps encrypt messages end to end, so neither company can read them in transit. WhatsApp uses the Signal Protocol, which is well respected. Talklio uses AES-256-GCM through the browser's built-in Web Crypto, with the key stored in the link fragment that browsers never send to servers. You can read the full details on our [security page](/security).

Where they differ is everything around the messages. WhatsApp keeps your chat history on your phone and, if you turn on backups, in iCloud or Google Drive. Those backups can be end-to-end encrypted, but only if you switch that option on. Talklio has no history to back up.

## Disappearing messages

WhatsApp lets you turn on disappearing messages per chat, with timers of 24 hours, 7 days or 90 days, and you can set a default for new chats ([Meta, 2021](https://about.fb.com/news/2021/12/whatsapp-default-disappearing-messages-multiple-durations/)). It's opt-in, and either person can usually change it.

On Talklio, it isn't a setting. Every message deletes itself 24 hours after it's sent, for everyone, and nobody can switch that off. The whole space then closes after 30 days. If you want to be sure a conversation won't stick around, that certainty matters.

## Groups

WhatsApp is great for groups, from family chats to school parents. Talklio deliberately doesn't do group chats. A space has one owner and up to five people, and each person has a private chat with the owner. If you need a group, WhatsApp (or Signal) is the right call.

## When to pick WhatsApp

## When to pick Talklio

- You're [taking a break from social media](/guides/how-to-take-a-break-from-social-media) and want a private line to a few people
- You don't want to share your phone number with someone
- You want messages that disappear by default, with no way to turn that off
- You want a conversation that ends on its own after a month

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Talklio more private than WhatsApp?

In some ways, yes. Talklio needs no phone number or account, deletes every message after 24 hours, and closes spaces after 30 days, so there's far less data about you anywhere. WhatsApp also encrypts messages end to end, but it's tied to your phone number and keeps your history unless you set timers.

### Can I use Talklio and WhatsApp together?

Absolutely. Most people keep WhatsApp for everyday life and use Talklio for specific private conversations or while they're off social media.

### Does WhatsApp still need a phone number in 2026?

Yes. WhatsApp's new usernames let you hide your number from people you message, but you still register your account with a phone number.
