# Talklio vs Snapchat

> Snapchat made disappearing messages famous, but it's a full social network with an account, friends list, stories and feeds. Talklio keeps only the disappearing part: no account, no feed, end-to-end encryption, 24-hour messages and a private space that closes after 30 days.

Snapchat taught a generation that messages don't have to last forever. But it wrapped that idea in a social network with streaks, Stories, Spotlight videos and a map of where your friends are. Talklio is for people who like the disappearing part and want to leave the rest behind.

## Disappearing, two different ways

On Snapchat, chats are usually deleted after both people have viewed them, though either person can tap to save a message in the chat. Snaps disappear after they're opened. It's built for quick, playful back-and-forth.

On Talklio, messages last exactly 24 hours from when they're sent, whether or not they've been read. That gives the other person time to actually see your message, and nobody can save it inside the app. Then the whole space closes after 30 days, so even the container goes away.

## The social network question

The main reason people pick Talklio over Snapchat isn't the deletion. It's everything else. Snapchat is designed to keep you opening it: streaks, notifications from Stories, recommended videos. If you're [taking a break from social media](/guides/how-to-take-a-break-from-social-media), Snapchat is often one of the apps you're trying to quit.

Talklio has no feed, no discovery and no way for strangers to find you. The only people there are the ones you invited.

## Accounts and identity

Snapchat needs an account with a username, birthday and a phone number or email. Talklio doesn't ask for any of that. A space has display names and passwords, and when it closes, it's gone.
