# Talklio vs Signal

> Signal is the gold standard for a permanent, secure messenger, and we recommend it. Talklio is for temporary private chats with no install and no sign-up at all: you share a link, messages always delete after 24 hours, and the whole space closes after 30 days.

We'll say it up front: Signal is excellent. It's run by a nonprofit, its encryption protocol is used by WhatsApp and others, and it collects very little about you. If you want a secure messenger for the long haul, install Signal.

Talklio does something narrower. It's for a short stretch of private conversation with a handful of people, without anybody needing to install anything or sign up. Here's how the two compare.

## Quick comparison

| | Talklio | Signal |
| --- | --- | --- |
| What you need to sign up | Nothing. A name and password per space | A phone number (numberless sign-up is in beta) |
| Install | No, it runs in the browser | Yes, an app on your phone (desktop links to it) |
| End-to-end encryption | Yes, AES-256-GCM | Yes, the Signal Protocol |
| Disappearing messages | Always on, 24 hours | Optional, with timers from seconds to weeks |
| Chat lifespan | Space closes after 30 days | Indefinite |
| Group chats | No, one-to-one chats only | Yes |
| Voice and video calls | Yes | Yes |
| Best for | Temporary, link-based private chats | Your main secure messenger |

## Sign-up

Signal has traditionally needed a phone number to register. Since 2024 you can set a username and hide your number from the people you talk to. In September 2026, Signal began testing [sign-up without a phone number](https://www.privacyguides.org/news/2026/09/16/signal-enables-phone-number-less-registration-in-beta/) in its Android beta, with a small one-off fee to deter spam.

Talklio skips accounts altogether. The space owner sets a name and password for each person, sends one link, and that's it. That makes it handy when you want to talk to someone who doesn't have Signal and isn't going to install it for a short conversation.

## Encryption

Both apps are end-to-end encrypted, and both companies say they can't read your messages. Signal's protocol has been studied by cryptographers for years and adds features like forward secrecy, which limits the damage if a key is ever stolen.

Talklio uses standard, well-tested building blocks (AES-256-GCM, HKDF and PBKDF2 through the browser's Web Crypto API) and keeps the key in the link's fragment so it never reaches our servers. It doesn't offer forward secrecy within a space. We make up for some of that by deleting everything within 24 hours and closing each space after 30 days. Our [security page](/security) lays out exactly what we can and can't see.

## Disappearing messages

Signal lets you set a [disappearing messages timer](https://signal.org/blog/disappearing-by-default/) per chat, choose custom lengths, and even set a default for new conversations. It's flexible, but it's a setting.

On Talklio it's the rule. Every message disappears 24 hours after sending, and there's no way to keep it. The space itself ends after 30 days.

## Web app vs installed app

Signal is a phone app first. Talklio is a website you can add to your home screen. That's convenient, but it's a trade-off worth knowing: a web app's code is fetched from the server each time you open it, while an installed app is signed and updated through an app store. We keep Talklio's app code small and free of third-party scripts to limit that risk.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Talklio as secure as Signal?

Signal is more battle-tested and has stronger long-term protections like forward secrecy. Talklio is end-to-end encrypted with standard algorithms and deletes everything quickly, which suits short-lived chats. For your main secure messenger, choose Signal.

### Does Signal need a phone number?

As of October 2026, yes for most people. Usernames let you hide your number from others, and numberless registration is being tested in Signal's Android beta.

### Can I use both?

Yes, and plenty of people do. Signal for everyday life, Talklio for temporary private spaces that clean up after themselves.
